Require a channel subscription before writing in your Telegram group
Ask group members to subscribe to your channel before they can write.
Subgate in short
Subgate checks channel subscriptions when members write in a Telegram group. An unsubscribed member is restricted and gets a channel link with an I subscribed button for a fresh check.
- Handle: @MostLikelyToProBot (https://t.me/MostLikelyToProBot)
- Add to a group: Make the bot a group admin with permission to restrict members and delete messages, make it a channel admin, then send /setchannel @channel in the group. Link: https://t.me/MostLikelyToProBot?startgroup=site&admin=restrict_members+delete_messages
- Start in private: Open the bot and press Start for setup instructions. Configure the channel in your group.
- Price: Free for one channel. Pro is optional and costs 150 Stars once per group for up to 3 channels and your own text, with no footer.
Limits
- One required channel is free. Setting another channel on the free plan replaces the previous one.
- The bot must be a channel admin, including for private channels. Private channels need an invite link the bot can use or permission to create one.
- Group admins are never checked. Bots and messages sent as a channel are skipped. A successful check is cached for 10 minutes; a failed lookup does not restrict a member.
Facts checked against the bot on .
Subgate runs as @MostLikelyToProBot. When a member writes without subscribing to the required channel, the bot deletes that message if it has permission, restricts the member and shows a channel link. After subscribing, the member taps I subscribed for a fresh check and can write again under the group's usual permissions.
Make the bot an admin of your group with permission to restrict members and delete messages. Make it an admin of the channel too, then send /setchannel @channel in the group. Use your channel's actual username in place of @channel.
Group admins are never checked. Bots and messages sent as a channel are skipped too. If Telegram can't confirm membership, the bot doesn't restrict the member. A successful subscription check is cached for 10 minutes, so leaving a channel isn't detected immediately.
Commands
| Command | Example | Does |
|---|---|---|
/setchannel | /setchannel @channel | Choose the required channel as a group admin. A numeric channel ID also works; without an argument, the bot uses the group's linked channel. |
/channels | /channels | Show the current channels and plan. |
/removechannel | /removechannel @channel | Stop checking this channel. With only one channel, the argument can be omitted. |
/settext | /settext {name}, please subscribe before writing. | With Pro, set the text above the buttons. {name} inserts the member's name. Use /settext reset to restore the default. |
/pro | /pro | Show the optional group upgrade. Payment happens in a private chat with the bot. |
/help | /help | Read the setup instructions in a private chat. |

Free vs Pro
Free
- One required channel per group
- Subscription prompt with a small footer and an add-to-group button
Pro. 150 Stars, one-time, per group
- Up to 3 required channels and your own prompt text
- No footer under the subscription prompt
Privacy
- The bot stores group and channel IDs, channel links, settings and Pro status. It keeps membership check results and records of members it restricted so it can check again and lift its own restrictions.
- It also stores source tags and counters. Payment support messages you send to the bot are stored as text. It doesn't store the contents of ordinary group messages in its group tables.

FAQ
- Does it work with private channels?
- Yes. Make the bot a channel admin and send /setchannel with the numeric channel ID, or omit the argument for the group's linked channel. The bot needs a usable invite link; if none is available, it needs permission to create one.
- Are admins required to subscribe?
- No. Group admins and owners are never checked. Test with a regular member account. The check starts when a member writes, not when they join.
- What does Pro cost?
- Pro is optional and costs 150 Stars once per group. It allows up to 3 channels and your own text, and removes the footer. One channel stays free. On the free plan, setting another channel replaces the previous one.
- What if the bot loses access to the channel?
- When it can't verify membership, it doesn't restrict anyone on that failed check. Restore its channel admin access and group permissions. A member already restricted by the bot can subscribe and tap I subscribed for a fresh check.
