How to Add a New Year Countdown to a Telegram Group
A New Year countdown in a Telegram group is more useful when it is a single message that stays current instead of a new post every morning. CountdownDaysBot posts one card and edits that same card as the number of days changes, so the chat does not fill up with repeated announcements.
You set the target date and a label with one command. For New Year 2027 the command is /countdown 2027-01-01 New Year. The bot then keeps the card up to date, and anyone who opens the group sees the same countdown rather than an old message from last week.
Free groups can keep two active countdowns at a time. Pro is a one-time 150 Stars payment per chat and removes that limit, adds a custom emoji and switches to hourly updates during the final two days.

Steps
- Open the group where the countdown should live. Run the command in the group itself, not in a private chat with the bot, so that the card is posted where everyone can see it.
- Send the date and the label. Type /countdown 2027-01-01 New Year. The first part is the target date in YYYY-MM-DD form and the rest is the text shown on the card. Keep the label short so it reads well on a phone.
- Let the bot maintain the card. The bot posts one message and edits it as the remaining days change. You do not need to send the command again each day, and the group does not get a new notification for every update.
- Check what is already running. Use /countdowns to list the active countdowns in the chat with their dates and remaining days. /next shows the soonest one with a more precise breakdown, which is handy in the final week.
- Set the group timezone and stop old cards. If the day count looks wrong around midnight, set the group offset with /ctz, for example /ctz +3. Use /stop with the countdown id when a countdown is no longer needed; the creator or a group admin can do it.
Good to know
- The free tier allows two active countdowns per group. A New Year card, a birthday card and a holiday card cannot all run at once on the free tier; Pro removes the cap for a one-time 150 Stars payment per group.
- The card is edited when the displayed number of days actually changes, not on a fixed public schedule. Pro countdowns switch to hourly precision during the final two days, which matters if the group is counting down to midnight.
- The target date is a calendar date, so the countdown reaches its final state on that date rather than at a specific hour on the free tier. Use the label to make the moment clear, for example New Year or New Year 2027.
- A countdown belongs to the chat where it was created. Creating one in a private chat with the bot does not post it into a group, and a card in one group is not listed in another group's /countdowns.
- Stopping a countdown does not delete the old message from the chat history. It stops future updates. If the group wants a clean card, create a new countdown after stopping the old one.
FAQ
- Does the bot send a new message every day?
- No. It posts one card and edits that message when the number of remaining days changes. The group keeps a single countdown instead of a daily stream of posts.
- How many countdowns can a group run for free?
- Two active countdowns per group. Pro is a one-time 150 Stars payment for the chat and removes that limit.
- Why is the day count off by one?
- The remaining days are computed from the group's timezone offset. If the card changes at the wrong time, set the offset with /ctz, for example /ctz +3, and check the target date again.
- Can I use it for something other than New Year?
- Yes. The same command works for birthdays, trips, deadlines or any other date. New Year is simply the seasonal example: /countdown 2027-01-01 New Year.
