How to Organize Secret Santa in a Telegram Group

Organizing Secret Santa for a group usually falls on one person doing manual work: collecting names, drawing matches by hand, and DMing each one individually while trying not to slip up in the group chat. SantaDrawProBot automates every step of that inside Telegram, so the organizer just sets it up and runs the draw when everyone's joined.

This walkthrough covers the organizer's side, start to finish — budget, join period, exclusions, the draw, and reminders.

None of this requires coordinating outside Telegram — no shared spreadsheet, no separate name-drawing app, no group DM thread trying to keep a secret that half the group can already guess.

Steps

  1. Post the exchange with a budget and gift date. /santa 25 EUR 2026-12-20 in the group sets a suggested budget of 25 EUR and a gift date of Dec 20, then posts a 🎁 Join / Leave card. Only one exchange can be active per group.
  2. Let people join over the next days or weeks. Members tap Join on the card (after starting a private chat with the bot, prompted automatically if they haven't). There's no fixed join window — you decide when enough people are in.
  3. Exclude anyone who can't be matched together (Pro). Before drawing, run /exclude @alice @bob for any pair that shouldn't match — a couple, siblings, roommates. This can be run more than once for multiple pairs.
  4. Encourage everyone to set a wishlist. Remind participants to DM the bot /wish <item, item, item> before the draw — it's what their Santa sees once matched, so an empty wishlist means their Santa is guessing.
  5. Run /draw once joining is closed. This randomly matches every participant, honoring exclusions, and DMs each one their match and that person's wishlist. If a match needs redoing, Pro's /redraw re-runs the whole draw and resends DMs.

FAQ

Who can run the draw and set exclusions?
Only the organizer — the person who started the exchange with /santa. Participants can Join, Leave, and set their own /wish, but can't draw or exclude anyone.
What happens if the draw creates a bad match, like someone drawing their partner?
Set exclusions before drawing with /exclude @alice @bob (Pro) to prevent that pairing outright, or use /redraw (Pro) afterward to re-run the whole draw and resend fresh DMs.
Do participants need to be active in the group chat to take part?
They need to have started a private chat with the bot at some point — the Join button prompts them to do that first if they haven't, then they can tap Join again.
How long is the exchange's data kept?
Participants, matches, and wishlists are kept until the exchange date plus 30 days, then deleted automatically. The organizer can also end the exchange early to remove the data sooner.
