How to Move a WhatsApp Group to Telegram (Honestly)
Let's be honest up front: there is no button in WhatsApp that exports a group to Telegram, and Telegram cannot import a WhatsApp group. WhatsApp does not expose your group's member list or chat history to other apps, and no legitimate tool can pull it out for you. Any site promising a one-click "WhatsApp-to-Telegram migrator" is asking for your data, not helping you.
What you can actually do is move the people, not the data. A Telegram group takes a couple of minutes to create, and the practical migration is: create the Telegram group, generate an invite link, post it in the WhatsApp group, and let members hop over themselves. Telegram supports groups of up to 200,000 members, so almost no real-world group outgrows it.
Chat history is the part that genuinely doesn't transfer. WhatsApp can export a chat as a text file, but Telegram has no way to inject it back into a new group as messages. At best you can keep the exported .txt as an archive. Treat the move as a fresh start, and pin whatever context matters (rules, recurring events, key decisions) as new messages in the Telegram group.

Steps
- Create the Telegram group. In Telegram: New Group, give it the same name as your WhatsApp group, and add anyone who's already in your Telegram contacts. You can rename it and add a photo later.
- Generate an invite link. Open the group, tap the group name, then Add Members → Invite via Link. Copy the link. For a large or public group you can set the link to never expire; for a private one you can leave join approval on.
- Post the link in the WhatsApp group. Send one message in the WhatsApp group: what the Telegram group is for, the invite link, and the date you'll stop using WhatsApp. Pin that message so latecomers see it.
- Set a cutoff date and keep both groups briefly. Don't delete the WhatsApp group the same day. Run both for a week or two, repeat the invite link a couple of times, and answer questions in whichever chat people ask them. Then post a final goodbye message in WhatsApp and leave the group (or let it go quiet).
- Rebuild the essentials in Telegram. Pin the group rules or purpose, set a group description, and if your group relied on reminders or recurring nudges, add a bot. For example, NudgeRemindBot can deliver reminders into the group chat itself — free tier is 5 active reminders, enough for a weekly meetup nudge while everyone settles in.
Good to know
- Members move themselves. Nobody can be added to a Telegram group on their behalf from WhatsApp — each person taps the invite link and joins. A clear pinned message with the link does more than any tool.
- Chat history does not transfer. WhatsApp's "Export Chat" produces a .txt (optionally with media) you can archive, but Telegram cannot import it as real messages. Don't pay for any service claiming otherwise.
- Telegram group limits are generous: up to 200,000 members in a standard group, and admins, pinned messages, and per-member permissions are all built in — most groups find Telegram's admin tools stronger than WhatsApp's.
- If your WhatsApp group was actually one-way announcements (school class, club updates), consider making the Telegram version a channel instead of a group — channels allow unlimited subscribers and only admins post. See the groups vs channels guide below.
- Groups of friends rarely need bots on day one. The one most groups add early is a reminder bot, because "when is the next game?" is the first question every revived group asks. NudgeRemindBot's /remind fires into the group chat, and Pro (150 Stars, ≈ $3) removes the 5-reminder cap.
- Privacy note: members' phone numbers stay private on Telegram by default — many people prefer that to WhatsApp, where everyone in the group can see each other's numbers unless settings are changed.
FAQ
- Can I transfer WhatsApp group chat history to Telegram?
- No. You can export a WhatsApp chat as a text file for your own archive, but Telegram has no import for it — the new group starts with a clean history. Pin the important context as fresh messages instead.
- Can I automatically move all members over?
- No — there's no way to export a WhatsApp member list or add people without their action. Share a Telegram invite link in the WhatsApp group and let each person join with one tap.
- Is there a tool that migrates WhatsApp groups to Telegram?
- Not legitimately. WhatsApp doesn't expose group data to other apps, so anything advertising automatic migration is a scam or a privacy risk. The manual invite-link method below is the real answer.
- What's the member limit for a Telegram group?
- Up to 200,000 members in a standard group — far beyond what any WhatsApp group supports. If you just need to broadcast announcements to an unlimited audience, a Telegram channel is the better fit.
